Jonathan Aspropotamitis seeking K League stay after Pohang Steelers exit

Australian central defender Jonathan Aspropotamitis is seeking to extend his stay in South Korea after leaving Pohang Steelers.

Sources have told K League United that Aspropotamitis, now available on a free transfer, is very keen to remain in K League, having thoroughly enjoyed his two-year spell with the Steelers.

Aspropotamitis, who has Champions League experience, is approaching 200 games as a professional, and although a move to a K League 1 club would be preferred, the same sources say that he would also consider the right K League 2 club.

"Aspro," as he's known in K League, played the full 120 minutes in Pohang's extra-time Korea Cup triumph over Ulsan HD last year, and feels as though he has a lot more to offer and, having adjusted to life in South Korea, would be a ready-made fit for most clubs seeking a ball-playing centre back.

Initially signing on a one-year deal with Pohang, Park Tae-ha was impressed with Aspropotamitis's professionalism and calmness at the back, prompting the Steelers to offer him an extension.

The former Australia U23 international made 26 appearances for the Steelers after moving from A-League Men side Mcarthur in January 2024, where he won the Australian Cup.
