Newcastle United defeated Manchester City 2-1 in the Premier League at St.James’ Park on Saturday evening.

Newcastle should have scored inside the first minute, when Gianluigi Donnarumma’s poor pass fell to Harvey Barnes, but the Italian made up for his mistake by saving the forward’s shot.

Erling Haaland missed a chance at the other end after being put through on goal but he shockingly placed his effort wide.

Donnarumma made two good saves to deny Nick Woltemade, keeping the scoreline goalless before Barnes missed a sitter at the far post.

Pope was also called into action at the other end, making a superb stop to prevent Haaland from breaching his goal.

Phil Foden missed the last opportunity before the break, firing the ball wide of the post from inside the penalty area.

Seven big chances were created between both sides by the end of the first half, but none were converted — the highest in the first half in any league game since the 2012/13 season.

City started the second half on the front foot but the hosts repelled everything they threw at them.

Barnes broke the deadlock after the hour mark, making up for his first-half misses by burying a loose ball into the bottom corner.

Ruben Dias restored parity for the citizens with a powerful shot, leaving Pope rooted to the spot.

Newcastle reacted instantly, reclaiming their lead through Barnes, who capitalised on City’s failure to clear their lines.

Barnes has now become the first Newcastle player to score twice against City in a league since Alan Shearer did the same in November, 2003.

The result brings an end to the Magpies’ two-match winless streak and the Cityzens’ two-game winning run in the league .
