Pep Guardiola confirms Liverpool's next move

Liverpool's rut will end soon

Starting off the season, it was clear as night and day that Liverpool had issues bubbling under the surface and no amount of late goals could cover them up. After seven games of getting away with it, the dropped points soon came and it's been a relentless sequence of inconsistency ever since.

Eight losses have been lost this season from 18 games, and not one draw has been recorded. It's all or nothing right now, and the fans are getting increasingly frustrated. It goes without saying that more should be expected from the reigning Premier League winners, who spent £450m on transfers.

We seen slight glimpses of hope over the last month, with a 5-1 win over Frankfurt ending a four-game losing streak, but 3-2 and 3-0 defeats to Brentford and Crystal Palace then followed. After that, back-to-back wins came against Aston Villa and Real Madrid, although we've since lost 3-0 against Manchester City and Nottingham Forest. It's one step forward and (at least) two steps back right now.

However, the Citizens went through an incredibly similar period last season and, while most fans were laughing at their failures at the time, their blip might give us an invaluable insight into ours.

Through 13 games, City had 10 wins and three draws; in their next 13 games, they managed just one win, three draws and nine losses. The end to their struggles came on an away trip to Leicester City in December, when they secured a 2-0 win. After that point, they only dropped points in seven of their last 20 Premier League games. Twenty-one wins, eight draws and nine losses got them third place.

Liverpool are in a similar state, although things aren't quite as bad yet. We started with seven consecutive wins, and have since followed with three wins and eight losses in our next 11 games.

Of those 18 games, 12 have been in the Premier League and our record is six wins, six losses. It is impossible to attempt to predict how the Reds' season will go, but if you asked most Liverpool fans if they would take third place right now, given we're eleventh right now, they would take it.

As such, there's still hope for the season and coincidentally, the equivalent of City ending their run against Leicester (A) is Liverpool facing Championship winners Leeds (A), which is a fixture that's scheduled to happen in just over two weeks' time. If history is to repeat itself, then that's the game.

Take from this what you will - after all, it's essentially copium for our disastrous form. At some point, you'd expect things to pick up, but it's just as plausible that this season could be a transitional one for the team, in which case, it's going to be a rollercoaster of emotions. Nonetheless, nothing can be guaranteed just 12 games into the season, but a lot will need to change under Slot moving forward.
