Forgotten former Gunner scores 3rd free-kick of the season

Former Arsenal academy defender Cohen Bramall scored his third free-kick of the season for Jack Wilshere’s Luton Town on Saturday, and it was his best of the bunch.

Cohen Bramall made a lot of headlines back in January 2017, after moving from non-league club Hednesford Town directly to Premier League side Arsenal.

Bramall featured in pre-season with Arsenal and played regularly for the club’s u23 side, as well as going out on loan to Birmingham City. But his spell with the Gunners ended soon after that, as he made a permanent transfer to Colchester United in August 2019.

The left-back may have fallen off the radar for a lot of Arsenal fans after that, but six years later he’s playing under fellow former Gunner Jack Wilshere at League One Luton Town.

Some things haven’t changed, like the fact Bramall still operates on the left flank, either as a left-back or a left-wing-back. But one element of the defender’s game fans didn’t see much at Arsenal is his free-kick taking ability.

On Saturday, with Luton hosting Port Vale, Bramall scored arguably the best free-kick of his career. It was a powerful effort into the top corner that would have beaten any goalkeeper, and at the time it put his side 1-0 up.

The free-kick was Bramall’s third goal of the season, with all three coming from similar set-pieces.

Bramall’s first goal of the campaign came against Barnet in an EFL Trophy victory, with his effort cannoning in off the crossbar. You can watch it in the video below from the timestamp 0:37.

The former Gunner then grabbed another free-kick goal away to Stockport, utilising the same technique for the same result. You can watch that goal below from the timestamp 0:19.

Though those are the only three free-kick goals Bramall has scored for Luton since joining in the summer, he did score a couple of free-kicks for Colchester United after his free transfer move from Arsenal.

The first was in a 3-0 win over Carlisle United, and the second was in the League Two play-off semi-final against Exeter City.

Following a bit of a drought in the five years after that, Bramall now looks to be nailed-on as Wilshere’s preferred free-kick taker for the foreseeable future.
