“Everything Happens for a Reason” – Chelsea defender reflects on leaving Barcelona

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella stepped in front of the media to discuss the significance of hosting Barcelona at Stamford Bridge in the UEFA Champions League.

For the Spanish defender, the match carries far more emotional weight than usual, given his history at La Masia and his early years with the Catalan club.

Now firmly established in the Chelsea squad, Cucurella reflected on the importance of the upcoming encounter as the Blues aim to secure their place among the top eight in the group stage.

Cucurella spoke openly about what the occasion means to him personally. Offering a glimpse into his mindset, he explained,

“It’s very exciting for me and my family. It’s a very special match and I hope we can get the points.

“I don’t think much about the past and whether I would have stayed at Barça. Everything happens for a reason. I’m very happy with my career.”

When asked about facing Lamine Yamal, one of Barcelona’s brightest young stars, Cucurella acknowledged the challenge ahead but highlighted the preparation behind it.

Providing context to their individual battle, he said, “It’s true that sometimes we can’t know everything, but I try to prepare as best I can.

“I know him a little, and obviously, I have the support of my team. I hope we play a great game.”

He further expanded on Yamal’s rapid rise and the outside attention surrounding the teenager. “He’s a very special player. He has to experience things because he’s very young.

“At the end of the day, he’s at a high level. He’s a great player. It’ll be a tough game.”

Praise for Pedri

Cucurella also shared his admiration for another Barcelona standout – Pedri. When asked which Barça player has impressed him the most, he immediately pointed to the midfielder’s exceptional talent.

“Pedri is the player who has surprised me the most. Last year and the start of this season have been impressive. You can see he’s a different player. It’s a shame about the injury.”

Elaborating further, he added, “He always wants the ball. He never loses it.

“A team like Barça, which always puts you under pressure, is a piece that will be missed. If Pedri doesn’t play, another great player will.”

Looking ahead to the challenge of stopping Barcelona’s attackers, Cucurella gave a straightforward assessment of what Chelsea expect on the pitch.

Describing what kind of match fans should anticipate, he stated, “Barça may not have controlled every game this year. But they’re doing well.

“It will be a good battle with Lamine. We’ll try to give our best to stop Lamine or Rashford. When the draw came out, everyone was talking about it. We’re looking forward to it.”

Finally, Cucurella summarised the tactical key to unsettling Barcelona’s rhythm.

Providing insight into Chelsea’s approach, he concluded, “The key will be to take the ball away from them.

“They want to dominate you and stay close to the box. We have to win the duels and the one-on-ones.”
