Barcelona defensive prodigy thrives in a centre-back role under Flick
Young defender Gerard Martin has quickly established himself as a key figure in the Barcelona backline, recently “graduating” to a new role as a left centre-back under manager Hansi Flick.
Martín’s evolution is being highlighted by the club as a prime example of individual progress under the German coach.
Flick has publicly expressed his admiration for the player’s development, noting that Martín’s versatility provides crucial tactical options.
“We will see him again as a centre-back, yes. He gives us the ability to build, and he played excellently. When he is on the pitch, we know exactly what he will deliver. We trust him 100%. He has worked a lot over the last year,” Flick said.
Martin was particularly impressive in the recent 4-0 victory over Athletic Club, where he played in the central defensive role.
Exceptional numbers from Martin
Martin’s stats from the Camp Nou reopening were exceptional. Defensively, he recorded four clearances, five balls recovered, one blocked shot, and won all five of his ground and aerial duels contested.

His proficiency in the build-up phase was equally impressive. The defender completed 88 successful passes out of 97 for a total accuracy of 91%. Crucially, his accuracy rose to 97% in his own half, demonstrating the composure Flick values for possession-based football.
Following his successful debut in the central role at the renovated stadium, the defender shared the profound emotional significance of the moment.
“Before the match, my mother sent me photos of me as a child sitting here watching the games. When you enter to play, you feel deeply moved, especially when it’s with Barcelona,” he said.
His seamless transition confirms his status as a guaranteed defensive option for Flick, capable of providing cover on the left flank or anchoring the central defence.
